After a Fashion: How to Reproduce, Restore, and Wear Vintage Styles by Frances Grimble. Lavolta Press, 20 Meadowbrook Drive, San Francisco, CA 94132. lavolta@best.com. http://www.lavoltapress.com
"After a Fashion was my first book (now in its second edition). I worked for various magazine and book publishers as an editor, and for software companies as a technical writer, for about 10 years before I wrote it. I decided to found my own publishing business, not because I had no offers from other publishers--I did--but because I calculated my own company would be more profitable. I then published two other books, with historic costuming patterns, The Voice of Fashion and The Edwardian Modiste. Then a second edition of After a Fashion. And of course I'm working on future books. I've learned more skills with each book, particularly production and marketing skills. Doing everything yourself is hard work. But, I still believe it's more profitable. I also think my books are probably higher quality. No one else will believe in or work for your books like you do. And there's more and more technological support for independent publishers. Graphics editing and page layout software are improving all the time. Now there's electronic publishing (which I have not gotten into). Computer hardware is constantly improving and getting more affordable (when I was in college, PCs didn't even exist, unless you made your own out of a TV monitor and Radio Shack parts). The Internet has been added to postal and other marketing venues. And there is an increasingly large community of other publishers to help you out, with how-to books, personal advice, co-op marketing, and in other ways. The reasons for publishing your own books, rather than relying on other businesses to do it, are increasing all the time. "

Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust by Charles Patterson. Lantern Books, P.O. Box 960 Herndon, VA 20172-0960. eternaltr@earthlink.net. anthroposophicmail@presswarehouse.com
"Eternal Treblinka (soon to be in 13 languages) about the common roots of animal and human oppression and similarities between how the Nazis treated their victims and how modern society treats animals. The book's title comes from the Yiddish writer and Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer: "In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for animals it is an eternal Treblinka." The book describes the emergence of human beings as the master species and their domination of the rest of the inhabitants of the earth and the industrialization of slaughter (of both animals and humans) during modern times--with America giving the world the slaughterhouse and Nazi Germany giving it the gas chamber. The book concludes with profiles of Holocaust-connected Jewish and German animal advocates, as well as a chapter on the compassionate vision of Isaac Bashevis Singer. "Charles Patterson's book will go a long way towards righting the terrible wrongs that human beings throughout history have perpetrated on non-human animals. I urge you to read Eternal Treblinka and think deeply about its important message." --Dr. Jane Goodall "Compelling, controversial, iconoclastic ...strongly recommended...a unique contribution." --Midwest Book Review "

Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered by Carolyn Howard-Johnson. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1591295505/qid=1035922871/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/103-5577005-2148665?v=glance&n=507846. HoJoNews@aol.com. http://www.TLT.com/authors/carolynhowardjohnson.htm
" Award-Winning Author Examines Fibs in Nonfiction A new collection of family stories explores the subject of truth, secrets and understanding. These are subjects that plague all families. "Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered" is creative nonfiction, a new term for an old genre. This form is well suited for this kind of examination. The foreword explains how the author, Carolyn Howard-Johnson, tells true stories remembered as truly as if they were photographs, as creatively as if they were fiction. In "Harkening" the author of "This is the Place" tells vivid stories as if each were an individual snapshot put together in a family album. Each may be read separately but together they feel more like a novel, a story that travels lineally from the beginnings of one family’s collective memory in Michigan as they settle in Utah and move out of it, Diaspora -fashion. "Harkening" is Howard-Johnson’s second book. Her first, "This is the Place," won the Reviewers’ Choice Award in the spring of 2001 and was named a Top Ten Novel in the Preditor and Editors Readers’ Poll. AmErica House honored it for exceptional sales and a chapter from the book was a finalist in the prestigious Masters’ Literary Award. Another was selected for inclusion in The Copperfield Review. It was also an NUW Book Club selection and received their award of excellence. A story from "Harkening" won the Red Sky Press Award before it was published. Howard-Johnson’s work has also been featured in anthologies like Pass Fail, Calliope’s Mousepad, Mothers of Authors and The Joy of Cancer. "

On The Cutting Edge by Dr. Robert F. Brodsky. Amazon.com/books. rfoxbro@aol.com.
"'On the Cutting Edge' – Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided missile, Computer, and Space Ages Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspec-tive to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky’s account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space. Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the accidental dropping of a ‘dummy’ atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s, some of which are just now coming to fruition. Practice is a Dirty Word; How to clean up your act by Ruth Bonetti. PO Box 422, The Gap, Qld 4061 Australia. ruth@ruthbonetti.com. http://www.ruthbonetti.com
"Thanks, Dan, for your great advice which helped get this little book great reviews: REVIEWS: Ruth Bonettiýs book Practice is a Dirty Word is a manual for the developing music student or the frustrated music teacher. For any of us who have learnt an instrument or have children who are learning one, this book will certainly strike a chord (foolish pun intended). It approaches the whole subject of laborious practice with a certain wit and light-heartedness and is laced with jokes that diffuse our attempts to make excuses for our lack of practice. Very useful also are instructions on how to practice efficiently so that we can spend less time ýpracticingý and more time frolicking in the yard. Ultimately, this book is designed to exterminate the bogeyman of music practice forever from our minds, a bogeyman whose legacy has been scaring potential Beethovens away from the keys, frets, horns, and drums the world over. --- Living Now Ruth Bonetti talks to young musicians explaining how to practice intelligently so that not only do they enjoy their playing, but they get great results. She shows how to plan practice time and gives practical help on setting goals, fixing mistakes and weaknesses, jazzing up practice and, best of all, demystifying those dreaded scales and arpeggios. Thereýs a chapter on managing teachers and parents, another on choosing the right instrument and another with helpful hints for students facing exams, competitions or recitals. This book is non-threatening and easy to read. The author is aiming at students, but the psychology behind her wise words would be helpful to many parents and teachers as well. Ruth Bonetti has inspired me. Iým off to make music. Available from www.ruthbonetti.com --- Good Reading Magazine For any parent or teacher who has come even close to tearing their hair out when it comes to their childýs music practice, this book is a godsend! Can you imagine never again having to nag your student to practice? Ruth Bonettiýs book could be the end of all your woes! Ruthýs book is a ýmust-haveý for every budding musician, for every frustrated parent and for every jaded teacher! --- Australian Music Teacher, Mary Nemet Australian author and music educator, Ruth Bonetti has written another ýgemý of a book whose many facets sparkle with sensible and practical suggestions for the budding musician. Her engaging and humorous writing style and lively lay-out of the book, all serve to deliver vital information about the serious business of practice, in a user-friendly fashion. I particularly enjoyed the sections on how to work smartý to learn a new piece. ---Music Teacher Magazine - Review by Margaret Brandman "
